Louis also owned L. Hammel Company that sold wagons and buggies. For more about that company, click here.

The following information about the Hammel businesses in Duluth was submitted by Karen Alpert Entous in 2010.

Louis Hammel sold horses. In the beginning he was a lonely horse dealer. A family horse could weigh 1150 pounds and a steal for $75 bucks! BUT, that soon grew into a much larger business. Not only did he sell closed and open delivery wagons, dump wagons, farm wagons, milk wagons, carriages and buggies to go along with the driving horses, but eventually Studebakers! Studebaker made wagons before cars and were known for their durability.

If you had a horse, you needed a feed box. So he sold feed boxes. Not everyone could afford a new wagon so he also stocked worn wagons for sale. All of this was housed in a show room 100 by 140 feet in size, giving a floor space of 12,000 feet for the company's vehicle trade. Location: Third avenue east and First street.

An auditorium was built three stories above the showroom in 1911. It was used for dancing, indoor baseball, wrestling matches, holding conventions, and roller skating. 2000 people could be seated for these conventions and athletic exhibitions.

Every year they produced and gave away large calendars. I would love to see one.

There is a private street called Hammel in Duluth, MN near the lake front. I bet the Louis Hammel family must have lived there.

Louis Hammel (1862-1925) was a son of Jacob Hammel (1833-1912) of the Hammel family. Family tree data for Louis, his parents, siblings and children are shown below.
